CIBA Vision Ophthalmics - Digital Grand Rounds

Digital Grand Rounds Program - Answer/Discussion

This patient was most likely into drugs back in the 60's and managed to burn his retinas by excessive sun gazing. Solar retinopathy is usually seen in people who view eclipses or are hard care sun bathers who party a bit too hard. Shortly after the exposure, vision is reduced to 20/40 - 20/200, but usually comes back to near normal. During the immediate post-burn phase, small gray zones of pigment can be seen around the fovea due to photochemical injury to the retina and RPE. Eventually, a lamellar hole replaces this zone.
