This patient was diagnosed with Posterior Staphyloma. This is the most common type of staphyloma and often involves the optic disc and macula. This condition often causes or is associated with tilted disc, lacquer cracks, retinal hemorrhage and other retinal problems. Often times, posterior staphylomas are associated with, and causative of, high myopia in involved eyes. Interestingly, the presence of the staphyloma, in this case, was not contributory to the amount of myopia in the eye. In the absence of any other measurable abnormalities, it was presumed that the reduced acuity in the left eye was most likely the result of Stiles-Crawford effect. These patients should be monitored carefully, including Amsler grids at home. Patients should be well educated about retinal detachments.
